Position Title:  Instructor, Health Sciences Academy

Reports To:  Director, Burlington Technical Center

 

Primary Function:  Provides quality, standards-based instruction in the area of Health Sciences: assesses and encourages student progress; manages an effective learning environment to maximize student achievement; maintains professional relationships with peers and professionals in related fields.

 

This is a half-time (0.5 FTE) position beginning in the Fall of 2017. This position is grant funded with the possibility of expanding into a full-time position in the future.

 

Please note: Teaching positions at Career and Technical Education Centers do not require a teaching degree or certification, rather a high skill set in this concentration area, and a high aptitude to mentor students and build instruction. Teaching certifications can be acquired over a period of time in our state approved Teacher / Preparation Program through Vermont Technical College.

 

Requirements:  

  • Educational Level:  Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a healthcare related field
  • Certification/License Required:
    • Valid teaching license in Health Sciences or eligible for licensure
    • Current healthcare professional license
    • Certified Instructor for First Aid and CPR (may pursue upon employment)
  • Experience:  Four years occupational work experience in a healthcare related field, two years of experience completed within the last five years

 

Primary Duties:

 

Instruction

  • Facilitates/Coordinates and delivers a rigorous Health Sciences Education curriculum with career-related instruction; assesses and provides for differentiation (including industry related, hands-on laboratory activities) to assure student progress while managing the learning environment
  • Administers standardized testing programs, subject-specific formative/summative assessments, and industry-recognized technical skill assessments, in accordance with directions provided, for the purpose of evaluating students’ industry certification competency levels attainment and/or the monitoring and development of individual learning growth and student progress towards achieving Personalized Learning Plan’s (PLPs) goals and relevant Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements (PBGR’s)
  • Sponsors/infuses co-curricular and CTSO experiences to students in the program for the purpose of leadership development, advanced technical skill attainment, workforce readiness preparation and college/career–readiness studies and to allow students to participate in educational and competitive events
  • Creates or selects long-range instructional plans based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities, student profiles and instructional priorities
  • Uses ongoing assessment to monitor student progress, to verify that learning is occurring, and to adjust curriculum and instruction
  • Provides feedback to students about appropriateness of responses and quality of work, in a timely manner, with a focus on improving student performance.

 

Classroom Management

  • Communicates high learning and behavior expectations for all students
  • Models enthusiasm for Health Sciences Education and demonstrates current innovations in the industry
  • Establishes and maintains a learning environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process
  • Sequences content and activities appropriately; paces lessons and instruction to encourage student achievement
  • Instructs students in the use, care, maintenance, and safe operation of program equipment and tools

 

Professional Relationships

  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  • Engages, conducts, and documents meeting minutes of an active local Health Sciences Education Advisory Committee to determine program needs and to keep abreast of job entry requirements, current technology and practices in the designated content field and for student referrals and placements
  • Establishes and maintains industry and post-secondary connections to promote/encourage students’ participation in continuing education opportunities, including experiential learning and  dual enrollment.
  • Maintains prompt and professional communication with parents, community and stakeholders

 

Other Essential Duties

 

  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance.  Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures
  • Manages and maintains program’s assigned equipment, software and supplies
  • Attends local, state and national staff development programs, workshops and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge, as required for licensure
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
  • Supports school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, events, ceremonies, services and programs
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
  • Works with guidance personnel in the recruitment of students, with a focus on equity of access
  • Possesses the physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities
