Job Description
The drama coach is one of four arts specialists in this unique and dynamic elementary school (IAA). The drama coach oversees and implements all of the school’s theater activities. Theater skills are developed in tandem with classroom teachers, in lessons and units that integrate theater into core content areas, primarily reading, writing and social studies. The emphasis is on the process behind creating theater, with very little focus on polished productions.
Responsibilities include:
- Creating, implementing, assessing and documenting lessons and units integrating theater with core content areas in conjunction with the new National Core Art Standards.
- Co-teaching and collaborating with all classroom teachers
- Working with small groups of students on academic and theatrical skills areas and following lead of classroom teachers and school mission.
- Producing plays directed by Very Merry Theatre and classroom teachers
- Assisting with all play performances and vocal presentations at IAA (Monday Morning Meetings, Friday Town Meetings, Visiting Performers, etc.)
- Overseeing student tech crew, technical equipment and furniture on IAA stage
- Serving as lead teacher for Flynn Center for Performing Arts
- Working directly with IAA arts coach and specialists to continuously refine the school’s vision of Arts Integration, reflecting and improving upon procedures
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university in education, theater arts or related field
- Experience creating, implementing and assessing theater curriculum for grades K-5
- Basic knowledge of K-5 core curriculum.
- Past experience of successfully collaborating with other professionals in creating curriculum and/or performance.
- Proficient management of student behavior in the classroom
- Skillful producing of student performances of all kinds.
