Burlington School District is seeking an energetic individual to fill out Custodial position on our second shift. The Evening Custodian is a non-exempt/hourly position that reports to the Director of Property Services. This position is a member of the AFSCME union, under the Property Services Employees master agreement. The Custodian works to provide a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff in which to teach, learn, and grow. Custodians will work within school buildings to prepare rooms for the beginning of each school day, upholding district standards of sanitation.

The Essential Functions of this position include:

  1. Sweeps and/or dust mops classrooms and corridors daily.
  2. Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
  3. Maintains lavatories in a clean and sanitary condition.  Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors, walls, and partitions, cleans and deodorizes washbasins and other lavatory facilities.  Refills towels, tissue, soap containers, etc.
  4. Washes windows, inside and out.
  5. Dust all school furniture and flat surfaces.
  6. Change light bulbs as necessary. 
  7. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  8. Cleans all chalkboards.
  9. Sweeps walkways, keeping them free of debris. 
  10. Participates in snow removal program by shoveling snow, or spreading chemicals, sweeping, or as otherwise directed.
  11. Performs minor, job-related, maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
  12. Cares for heating, lighting, ventilating, and plumbing systems in their area of responsibility.
  13. Collects and disposes of trash, scrap, and garbage and recycles materials.
  14. Reports all instances of vandalism and items which require repairs or service to the Director of Property services, or designee.
  15. Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned. 

The required education and experience for this position include: 

Education: 

  1. Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:  

  1. Minimum Required: Demonstrated aptitude and ability to meet responsibilities, outlined above.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (see highlighted bullet):

  1. Ability to maintain a valid State Driver's license.
  2. Ability to use brooms, brushes, mops, power-operated scrubbing machines, vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampooers, wet vacuums, liquid waxes & degreasers, dust absorbers, and other custodial supplies.
  3. Ability to read and write at an acceptable level.
  4. Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
  5. Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations.
  6. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
  7. Ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
  8. Ability to work as part of a team.
  9. Ability to perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.
