Burlington School District is seeking an energetic individual to fill out Grounds Maintenance position. Grounds Maintenance personnel at the Burlington School District work to provide a variety of maintenance and custodial services to meet the needs of the school district. The ideal candidate will be a team player with a positive attitude, reliable transportation and good time management skills. Preferred qualities include knowledge of operating power tools and equipment.
The Essential Functions:
- Operates snow plow and salt truck to remove ice and snow from roads and assigned areas, which require early morning starts and extended hours which includes sanding/salting road and walkways.
- Shovel snow, grounds maintenance and other duties as assigned related to facilities and roads maintenance.
- Operates a variety of tools, machinery and equipment and a variety of power and hand tools used in ground maintenance such as shovel, rakes, ax, brooms, and forks, leaf blowers and other tools.
- Operates commercial ground equipment such as dump trucks, tractor, front end loader, zero turn mowers, snow blowers, chainsaws and other equipment.
- Mow and edge lawns, weed, maintain flower and shrub gardening and mulch landscape beds
- Trim hedges, shrubs and small trees, remove dead, damaged, or unwanted trees or branches
- General maintenance and Athletic field maintenance.
- Follow all safety rules, policies and regulations. Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Notifies the Director of Property Services of any safety or other issues that may require immediate corrective response.
- Maintains accountability in maintaining assigned tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Director of Property Services and/or his/her designee
The required education and experience for this position include:
Education:
- Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Minimum required:
- Valid Vermont driver’s license.
- Working English language skills.
- Relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities above.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (see highlighted bullet):
- Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements
- Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and write at an acceptable level.
- Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, meet deadlines and schedules.
- Ability to perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.
EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS/TERMS:
- SALARY: As per the Master agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Property Services Employees, Appendix A. In addition to great health benefits and paid time off, this full-time position starts at $17.44 per hour based on experience (plus applicable shift differential currently at $1.30 per hour). This is a hourly position paid Bi-Weekly eligible for an applicable shift differential. Hours for 2nd shift positions are primarily from 2:30pm - 11:00pm Monday through Friday during the school year. *Hours and work location are subject to change at any time to reflect facility needs.*
